The flag of Germany is a tricolour flag featuring three horizontal bands of equal width. The bands are coloured black, red, and gold. The black band is at the top, the red band is in the middle, and the gold band is at the bottom. The flag is sometimes called the "Black-Red-Gold" or the "Bundesflagge". The flag was adopted as the national flag of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, after being used by democratic movements in Germany since the late 19th century.
